UCD Garret FitzGerald School and Lecture

The annual UCD Garret FitzGerald School and Lecture will take place on Thursday, 30 March 2017 in the UCD Sutherland School of Law, University College Dublin, Belfield, Dublin 4.

The theme of the event is ‘The Disruptions of 2016 and the Social Sciences’. The event will be of interest to policymakers, practitioners, UCD Alumni and members of the wider community interested in the impact of research in the social sciences and related disciplines in understanding society and human behaviour, identifying policy and social problems and addressing societal challenges.

‘Where to After Brexit/Trump? Navigating an Uncertain Future”

Catherine Day is a former Secretary General of the European Commission, a post she held from 2005 to 2015. Prior to that she was Director General for Environment and worked in the external relations part of the European Commission as a Director and deputy Director General. Catherine worked in the Cabinets of Commissioners Richard Burke, Peter Sutherland and Leon Brittan between 1982 and 1996.
She was educated in Mount Anville, Dublin and has a B.A in economics and politics and an M.A. in international trade from UCD.
Catherine now chairs the Governing Body of University College Cork and is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Chester Beatty Library. She is on the board of the European Movement Ireland, the Institute of International and European Affairs in Dublin and the Advisory Council of the European Policy Centre in Brussels. She is a special adviser to the President of the European Commission, Mr Jean-Claude Juncker.
